How the West Stole Democracy from the Arabs: The Syrian Congress of 1920 and the Destruction of its Historic Liberal-Islamic Alliance Customer Reviews
:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jo Phoenix -- finally, the arab side's point of view : Finally! You get to hear what the arabs went through, what were they told, and how they were forced into mandates. History is written by the victor, so the Arab view was previously lost to history. This follows King Faisal's point of view in detail. Very interesting read. Glad these details were not erased with history. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ammar Almaaytah -- The hideous nature of European colonialism : Just a simple explanation to the hideous nature of French and British colonialist policy that destroyed the natural and proper evolution of the middle eastern society that we still the pay the price for till today. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sharon Bracken -- Good history book : This book adds so much to what I already knew about this era. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from UbuntuUser -- Unremitting sordid tale : Filled with useless and unnecessary details. Invest your time elsewhere. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2020 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Garbis -- Interesting : The book offers very insightful perspective on the events that followed World WarI. Yet the book fails to draw a good narrative but rather states objective facts. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2020 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from hana -- Detailed history of how the West ruined Syria : I would say that this is a 3.5 star upgraded to a 4 star. On principle this story is quite fascinating. I feel like generally speaking we in the Western world tend to believe that the Middle East has always been an area deeply conflicted and a region where aggression toward Western countries was expected. So to learn of a time when this wasn’t the case is quite interesting. This covers a long forgotten time in the history of Syria where after years of conflict, the appointed King Faisal, undertakes the process of building a democratic system inside Syria. A system that in context looked a lot like our own democracy here in the US. Repeated snubs and sabotage largely at the hands of the French and the British, the ruling system ultimately collapsed in 1920 or so, but not before the democratic Syrian Congress produced a remarkable document in the form of the Syrian Government Constitution of 1920. 100 years later it is hard to fathom what Syria once could have been. It is only through studious preservation that this rare document exists to be translated for our understanding. While many events have subsequently occurred across the Middle East that has resulted in much instability and friction, this book certainly begs the question, what would the world look like now if the Western Allied Countries had supported the Syrian Government and then left them to rule as a sovereign nation without interference? Given the debauchery of the French Government, I certainly came to have an understanding of the context of the frustrations of many of the Arab people. This is certainly eye opening, but may not appeal across the board to all people. It may be for more of a targeted audience. Story appears to be rigorously researched. Information can be a little dry at times, and the rather complex native Syrian names do not help with tracking the story. If you are interested in middle eastern policy or history this is certainly worth a read. Thank you to Netgalley for the early copy in exchange for an honest review. - from The View -- VINE VOICE : Moving Enlightening Account of Syrian Democracy ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Geoff H. -- Interesting but flawed study : A fascinating study of the rise and fall of the Arab kingdom in Syria, characterised by Britain’s betrayal of the Arab revolt and France’s colonial ambitions. Thompson’s book contained much that I did not know, and was valuable in filling out the troubled picture of Faisal between his arrival in Damascus and his coronation in Iraq, and of the local politics surrounding the establishment of the kingdom. I cannot say how much of this is original research, and how much derived from elsewhere. The book has two main failings. The first is Thompson’s rather shouty manner. I understand her engagement, but she can too often appear to be drifting into the partisan or the polemic. The second is the writing, which can be repetitive, and shoukd really have been tightened up by a decent editor. Her judgments too are often dubious. For example, reports, apparently approvingly, Rida’s conclusions that a treaty between Sharif Hussein and Ibn Saud would have secured troops to combat France. But there was never any possibility of a treaty with Saud’s violent Wahhabi bigots, who were interested only in conquest if the Hejaz, and nor would his Bedouin forces have been able to combat France’s in open warfare. Faisal’s cautious approach reflected a bitter reality. And we get well into a gushing view of Woodrow Wilson before Thompson refers - in a rather mealy-mouthed way, to his virulent racism. So, in all, very useful, but could have been better. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 17, 2020 )
