:- 3.0 out of 5 stars from js14 -- Interesting but : So I'm maintaining like with the last book not much actually happened in this installment. Yes Janette is kidnapped and then rescue gaining important information in the process but this all could have been done in a few scenes rather than the course of a book. While the book definitely serves as a commentary on modern politics making fictional correlations to real events in parts it kind of reads like the author's focus is more on emotional need to vent about a world gone wrong and a people that seem blind to it than a need to tell a story. Jannette and Bradley suddenly jumped into this really connected relationship in a sort of whiplash manner. The secondary characters are still mostly underdeveloped and lack distinction and the book still features way more telling than showing. It's not that I don't like the main character I do and I'm not saying I can't see and agree with a lot of the author's politics but I almost feel like it's a topic Blain needs to step back from to gain focus on what she wants to say. The plot meanders and the pure emotional triggers and hot points in the novel seem to deter from Blain's usual talent to tell a focused and engaging story. It's okay but not nearly at the level of most of the author's body of work. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from JW USA -- Interesting : Another interesting adventure for Janette and her crew. There is progress in her relationship with Bradley. It follows the same style and format as book one - lots and lots of conversation that reveal the story. They still haven’t resolved the murder mystery and had added more mysteries which is a little frustrating as there is no arc that is resolved. The voices sounds very much like those in the Jesse Alexander series along with the obsession with animals and the plot devices of being seriously ill and being kidnapped. - 2.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer- Fence Post -- Too political of a story to fully enjoy. : I enjoyed the 1st book a lot more. Why inject so much of political mayhem that weighed down the story line, I'll NEVER understand. We get enough political NASTYNESS in our real lives everyday. It's the main reason why I enjoy SiFi and fantasy reads. To escape the unpleasant things we have to deal with everyday. This book was too much like real life for me to enjoy. Sorry. But true. The next book better, be much better, than this one or you've lost me as a customer. Again, the truth. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021 )
- 2.0 out of 5 stars from D. Parker -- Mary Sue meets attempt at writing a novel : This is the second of these books I've read, I thought I'd give this author another try, now I'm regretting that. The antagonist of this book is a complete Mary Sue. Much of the dialogue within the book is inane and repetitive. At least she's talking less about Chinese food and her cat in this volume, instead she vspends a lot of time regurgitating information to people who may or may not be her allies, information she should be keeping to herself. She knows that people are worried about her being hurt or taken, but she insists on running off by herself in an attempt to behave in an "adult" manner. There's nothing adult about not taking all of the possibilities into consideration. Whoever edited this book needed to take a fine bladed knife to it. It should be about half this size. With the repeated conversations about medical procedures, costs of medical care, pointless ruinations that are probably supposed to be entertaining and yet miss that mark, the actual point of the book gets lost and the arc of the story goes nowhere. There's the basis of something that's halfway decent here, but the arrow is so far off the mark. I wanted to like the characters within the novel, but they kept doing incredibly stupid things. Like the future father-in-law who's got severe heart disease yet doesn't get it treated because he's waiting for the protagonist to take care of it. But, he never asked her to take care of it. I can't even ... There are so many things wrong here that if I listed them I'd have a novella myself. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- More, give me more and still not satisfied... : The bad news, I want book three now. I'm feeling a bit like her most Magnificent Grumpiness waiting for her food (or brushing) in the morning. The good news is that I get to reread books one and two before three comes out, and any other time in between. The details behind the kidnapping are an unexpected surprise and the unwrapping of said present is a delight. I'm not saying anything else so you can enjoy it too. I'm also going to say that if you enjoy the banter and the story telling, run, don't walk to her Magical Rom-Com series (with a body count) for more reading fun. Start with Playing with Fire. There's also a collection set that will save you money. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Katy -- Booked for a good time! : Janette is fabulous! She does what needs done according to her own beliefs and ethics regardless if her family and friends approve. However, this leads to her kidnapping. (Is it really a kidnapping if you agreed?) when she finally escapes, it’s with a new foot and to discover that 9 months have passed. She contacts her handsome fiancé who brings along his father to rescue her. They discover she was kidnapped for all the right reasons, but the government has worse plans than they thought… ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tz -- Wow! This is a wonderfully intense book! : I love the characters as always with RJ Brain's books. The plot is amazing, the fight for good to survive over evil is well written. I can't wait for the next one. This ( Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Barbie -- Can’t wait for book 3 : I tried to read Booked for Kidnapping slowly to make it last, but it was too good to put down. This story is darker than the Magical Romantic Comedies, but still contains some humor. I enjoyed the interactions between the characters, and the way the twist was revealed. - 3.0 out of 5 stars from nlondonhousewife -- A filler in the series : Clearly the author loves writing dialogue but after a while it actually became irritating and repetitive within this book. It felt as though it just needed a more ruthless editor to take out some of the more author-indulgent pages of dialogue going nowhere, adding nothing. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from ismarah -- Muddled unpleasant mess - DNF : I read the first book in this series and as it ends with lots of things unresolved, I thought I’d read this too, for the resolution. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 27, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sandra Vale -- Excellent second novel in this series : Firstly, if you think that this is going to be a similar read to Blain's romantic comedies, then you will be disappointed. However, this is a great follow-up to the first book, Booked for murder. More a mystery type book with romantic elements. The book centers on Jeanette's kidnapping and more is revealed about America's political problems. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Dark, but with a fluffy feline : Loved it, but it's dark and the lighter moments are few and far between. There's evil at the top of the government, but who is a mystery. Janette goes to a memorial for the killed politician and gets drawn into trouble. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 12, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jan Tucker -- Not a rom com, but very good! : While the sassy snarky female lead is as expected and enjoyable, this series has a serious storyline and I can't wait for the next book. Highly recommended👍 ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2021 )
